A Note on Life

An essay on presence and the essence of existence

I reproduce here a text I read on the website Society of 2000 that has always caught my attention for its strange poetry.

Especially striking is how certain situations pass unnoticed—we tend not to account for the impulses that life offers us day after day throughout our journey around it. If, once in a while, events burst through the routine that crushes everyday life with delirious insistence, the conclusion is that something abnormal is occurring and therefore foreign to existence itself. Why? Life is, in essence, everything that happens within it, including what is supposedly never supposed to happen.

A piece of advice for any wise soul is to sit, during some of the many moments that unfold, and simply contemplate what is happening in that precise instant, and that is all. When references, taken as centers around which daily affairs revolve, cease to be so, the gain produced in consciousness rises above every preconceived idea. Without prior judgment, without conceptual demagoguery, the surroundings appear alive, displaying their clearest spontaneity.

Below acceptable levels—understanding acceptable levels as those that predispose the individual to continue being just that: an individual—the attitude to take is simply one of development within underdevelopment. Only through positive attitudes can one overcome any chronic or temporary indisposition. Beyond the dreams that invade certain neuronal processes lies indifference, which has little to do with the magnificent irregularity that characterizes life.
